Texas Trivia

By 1904 approximately 500 acres of onions were planted in South Texas. In 1907 over 1,000 carloads of onions were shipped out of Texas. Shipments reached 6,735 carloads in 1917, an amount not exceeded until 1929, when 7,232 carloads were shipped. The largest movement in fifty years for a single season was 10,164 carloads in 1946. In the 1950s Texas ranked first in the United States in total acreage planted with onions. Commercial production of peanuts began in Texas about 1906, when four or five carloads was grown, thrashed, and sold to a peanut oil, butter, and confectionery factory at Paris in Lamar County, the first such factory in the state. In 1907 about thirty carloads was produced. By 1908 production had reached 150 carloads; and in 1909 farmers harvested 48,000 acres for a yield of 26,400,000 pounds. Three peanut factories had been established by 1910.
