Texas Trivia

The women's suffrage movement can be highlighted by the establishment of the Texas Equal Rights Association in 1893. Suffragettes such as Minnie Fisher Cunningham, Jessie Daniel Ames, and Annie Webb Blanton were Progressive Era leaders in the struggle. In 1918 the legislature voted to extend women the vote in primary elections, and in 1919 Texas became the first southern state and ninth state in the nation to ratify the Nineteenth Amendment to the constitution. Armed with the vote some Texas women such as Miss Blanton ran for office and served the public well. The farmers of the 1920s experienced many of the problems of the Great Depression well before the Stock Market Crash of October 1929. Most U.S. history textbooks refer to the agricultural depression of the 1920s and explain it most often in terms of the return of European farmers to their fields after World War I. The situation was actually much more complex than that. Many factors, both on the supply side and the demand side, seemed to conspire against the farmers.
