Texas Trivia

The most important cash crop in Texas history has been cotton. The most important mineral resource has been petroleum. In 1930-1931 a variety of forces combined to create crises of overproduction in both cotton and petroleum. The prices of both products plunged below the point at which Texans could profitably engage in production. In this lesson students compare the responses to the crises. In the case of cotton a notable response was Louisiana governor Huey Long's cotton holiday proposal of ceasing to grow cotton in 1932. Although encouraged by Long, the Texans would not go all the way and instead passed an acreage reduction act.
